our community
& heritage

We know that persistence, sacrifice, courage and hard work are needed to build something worth having.

With a population of over 72,000 residents of Polish heritage in our city, our community is vibrant. Many have lived here for generations; others are more recent immigrants to Canada. We have a rich heritage of good food, fellowship, faith, arts & culture, dance and music, and a profound love of family.

Polish settlers who arrived in Alberta more than 120 years ago also knew that. Despite the hardships they and their families endured over the decades that followed, they persevered and prevailed. This is part of our proud history and tradition.

Building was a big part of that history and a church was often the first building that Polish settlers built, even if they settled in isolated rural hamlets and villages across the province. Building community was important then, as it is now.

Caring for our seniors comes naturally. We continue in our ancestors footsteps to build and celebrate in the heritage and culture we share.

PHSE is a non-profit charitable organization proudly serving the local Polish-Canadian community since 1992. In 1996, PHSE purchased 3.63 acres of bare land from the City of Edmonton in central Edmonton, next to the existing Polish Hall.

Our focus is on developing the land for the Polish community. We aim to support seniors, preserve our heritage, celebrate our culture, and contribute to the revitalization and strengthening of the local Polish community.

Centre Polonia will support various activities including Saturday Polish school, scouts, folk-dance groups and non-profit organizations. The 20,000 square foot facility will have a museum, archives, a Polish restaurant and library. We will work with the diverse ethnocultural dynamic of the local Central McDougall community in order to support their organizational needs.

PHSE GOALS

We are building community to bridge the gap between generations, recognize and honour builders of Polonia, and create a gathering place for adults, children and youth to learn, grow, meet new friends, and make new memories in a safe a stimulating environment.

1. Establish affordable housing with specialized services for senior citizens

2. Administer and maintain a multi-use recreational facility and museum for the Polish-Canadian community and the public.

3. Provide financial assistance to students studying Polish Canadian heritage, history, culture, or language.
